Nirbhaya case: Four Indian men Delhi bus rape Convict hanged to death in Tihar jail
All four convicts of Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case - Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma, and Mukesh Singh - were hanged at 5:30am in Tihar jail today. The hanging was carried out as per the schedule after a three-judge Supreme Court bench rejected the final plea by the convicts' lawyer AP Singh to stay their execution in a late-night hearing.
The crime, which happened on the night of December 16, 2012, sparked enormous protests and global outrage. The victim was dubbed Nirbhaya - the fearless one - by the Indian press, as she could not be named under Indian law.
"Today, justice has been done after seven years," the victim's mother told reporters outside the prison. "I salute Indian judiciary and thank God for hearing our prayers ... my daughter's soul can now rest in peace."
Smriti Irani: Justice has finally been done to Nirbhaya
"I have seen Nirbhaya's mother's struggle over the years, though it took time to get justice but it has been done finally. It is also a message to people that you can run away from law but cannot finally avoid it. I'm happy that justice has been done," Smriti Irani said.
Nirbhaya convicts' last wishes
Minutes before they were hanged in the Nirbhaya case, Mukesh Singh said he would like to donate his organs while Vinay Sharma wanted his paintings to be given to the jail superintendent and his 'Hanuman Chalisa' to his family.
However, none of the four convicts -- Mukesh, Vinay, Pawan Gupta and Akshay Kumar Singh -- recorded any will, the official said.
