Ramayan, the over three-decade-old TV series based on Hindu mythology, garnered 170 million viewers in the few shows over the last weekend in its new avatar, the BARC said on Thursday. It's a very popular and high rated TV series.

Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi Shekhar announced in a tweet, "Thrilled to share that the re-telecast of RAMAYAN on @ddnational has garnered the highest ever rating for a Hindi GEC.

The show was relaunched last Saturday and a lot of thrust laid by the government machinery to popularise the series.

BARC's chief executive Sunil Lulla said the numbers notched up by the series was a bit surprising and called the move as a "brilliant" one by the Prasar Bharti. He said eventually, we will also see advertisers flock the series which will be running for a few more days.

The maiden show of the series on Saturday morning had 34 million viewers stick to their TV watching and enjoyed a rating of 3.4 per cent, while a telecast the same evening had 45 million viewers and a rating of 5.2 per cent.

The show bettered its performance on Sunday, with 40 million and 51 million people watching it in the morning and evening telecasts, respectively.

Initially, with some less popularity, later the popularity of this serial reached a level where India as a whole would be in a virtual standstill. Everyone who had the television abandoned all his work and watch the serial.

During its transmission, the ramayana, India and world television became the most viewed programme in history and till the time B.R Chopra's Mahabharata was telecast, this title remained with him. Later due to the re - transmission and video production of ramayana, it again gained popularity. The limca book of records was listed in June 2003 as the "most watched mythological serial in the world".

"Ramayan kept an entire country indoors 33 years ago, but some doubt if it can do it again".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a three-week national lockdown to stop the spread of coronavirus, which is on the rise in India. In his address, Modi had repeatedly invoked the idea of ‘Lakshman Rekha’ — a concept that has its origins in the Ramayan — to drive home the need to stay home, self-isolate and practice social distancing to limit the number of infections in India. According to the myth, Lakshman had drawn a line at the threshold of Ram and Sita’s home, forbidding Sita from crossing it to ensure her safety.

That nationwide lockdown is like lakshman rekha for people now. The main motive of relaunching RAMAYANA is to be kept people at home. It brings back the childhood nostalgia.

Due to the lockdown and an increase in the number of positive Coronavirus patients, everyone is taking utmost care in keeping themselves safe. Everyone's using
precautionary measures to fight this deadly virus. Actress Hina Khan, who posts at least one video a day to inform the audience, has posted a very informative video, which was essential. Hina had stepped out to boy groceries and food. The actress stated how it's important to sanitise everything before she enters the house. Therefore, the actress took out all the stuff she brought and took a bucket of hot water with soap and dettol. Hina mentioned that soap kills the virus and there's a shortage of sanitizer everywhere.

The Kasautii Zindagii Ki actress captioned the video as. "#Covid19SafetyMeasures. Just trying to share my way of avoiding the loopholes as we get groceries from outside and it has a high risk of missing something that can be quite fatal. So hope this will be helpful to all of you out there! Stay Safe and let us all avoid silly #LoopHoles #21LockDown
#WeAreInThisTogether (sic)"

Hina also emphasised on how hot water and soap is easily available in everyone's homes. She said that many people touch the packs of milk, juice etc. and there might be a possibility of the virus stuck on to it. She also washed vegetables with clean hot water and got them dried under the sun in the balcony and then took home for consumption.
Talking about coronavirus, the number of infected patients in India has reached 2,069..
